Student accommodation website, Accommodation For Students , has today released the results of their latest survey, based on nearly 42,000 student reviews from 76 University cities and towns across the UK.
Among the highest scores achieved on the survey were Welsh Universities Cardiff, Swansea, Bangor and Aberystwyth, all being rated at 60% or higher by reviewers. In particular, Cardiff received a rating of 62%, one of the highest scores across the UK, further evidence that Cardiff is one of the best places to live as a student. Despite these excellent results, it wasn't all good news for the Welsh Universities, with Pontypridd finishing bottom of this latest survey.
While the University of Glamorgan may be investing millions in upgrading the campus and facilities, the students think life in Pontypridd is below par.
The survey identifies the best places to be a student based on five criteria, and the University town of Pontypridd has come bottom with a rating of just 44% satisfaction.
Students rated their University location with marks out of 10 across five criteria, including; going out, shops, transport links, community and facilities.
A University of Glamorgan spokeswoman indicated that applications for places had increased by more than 30% over the past two years, and that it was investing heavily in the campus to the tune of £130m. A new Students’ Union building is also due to open in September 2010, with new student accommodation being planned for 2011.
The spokeswoman added: “In 2009 the University opened brand new facilities for its Faculty of Health, Sport and Science students, and is currently developing a £3m sports facility, as well as an on-campus aircraft hangar complete with its own aircraft.” Speculation suggests that students attending the Treforest campus of the University of Glamorgan may consider commuting from Cardiff based on these latest figures.
