Albany Road in Roath is home to pretty much all of the biggest estate agents in Cardiff, including us.
A new environmentally-friendly waterfront development is about to rise in the vicinity of the International Sports Village, between Watkiss Way and Ferry Road.
Cardiff Pointe, which was given the go-ahead right before Christmas, has finally been granted final approval by councillors and work has begun to construct the £16m Ice Arena. Cardiff Pointe is actually made of four linked schemes designed by Scott Brownrigg, and will include a total of 798 homes plus bars and restaurants. These new homes will be a mixture of private and affordable housing thanks to a financial participation from Cardiff Council, which wants to give all residents a view of the Bay!
Cardiff Pointe will feature an Olympic sized twin pad ice arena, and the 3,000-seater venue will be the new home of the Cardiff Devils once construction is finally completed. When the arena is not being used for events, the ice rink will be open to the public along with the smaller ice pad.
Construction will be divided into several phases. Houses and apartments are a priority right now, and the first phase of the scheme will see the creation of around 100 sustainable apartments and houses. The £200m residential development will benefit from unique views across Penarth Marina and easy access to the city centre. The idea behind Cardiff Pointe is to create a small waterside community with everything you need at a short distance: convenience shopping, food, nightlife, sport facilities - everything will be a stone’s throw away. It is right by the International Sports Village which comprises of an ice rink, an International Pool with Leisure centre, a White Water Centre and the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club. Supermarkets and shops are less than a mile away and the vibrant Mermaid Quay is close by.
Following the construction of the houses and apartments, a new ISV scheme will be built. This scheme will include a 250-metre real snow indoor ski slope along with a 1,300 multi-story car park and a 115 bedroom hotel. A 32-storey landmark tower will also be built which will include an art-gallery, a 60 bed luxury hotel, 62 flats and a roof top gallery. There are also plans for a winter garden.
Once completed, Cardiff Pointe will be easily recognisable thanks to its two cantilever towers, landmarks of 23 and 27 storeys high, towering over the Bristol Channel.
Cardiff Bay is already one of Cardiff’s most spectacular locations. It has seen some significant redevelopment over the last 10 years, and the Cardiff Pointe project will add to the Bay’s portfolio.
Councillor Michael Michael said of the project: “It’s iconic and will enhance the city.
Cardiff Council Leader, Heather Joyce states:
“This development will not only look fantastic but will also create thousands of jobs, attracts tens of thousands more visitors to the city and provide homes – including affordable homes – for people in Cardiff”.
