We’re experts at student lettings here at CPS Homes letting and estate agents, and over the years we have seen an increasing number of students looking to experience something new and get a taste for a different culture by studying overseas. The UK is a very popular destination for international students, with many fantastic universities attracting thousands of students from across the world every year.
Wales certainly has its fair share of overseas students, and each year the country welcomes learners from over 170 countries, but why do so many students settle on the idea of studying in Wales?
Wales offers some truly top-notch learning opportunities with high quality facilities, as well as being a very safe and friendly country with plenty of places to explore, making it a great choice for overseas students to continue their learning. Here in Cardiff, major student areas, such as Roath and Cathays, offer the perfect living situation for students, with campuses nearby, as well as shops, bars, restaurants, parks and everything else people look for during student life.
Compared to many other parts of the UK, the cost of living in Wales is relatively inexpensive, and many of us have experienced the struggles a student budget can bring! Back in the summer we wrote about how Cardiff is the most affordable city in the UK for university students, and as a growing capital city with a lot to offer, its no wonder overseas students consider it a fantastic option. There are campuses in a variety of locations across Wales, including coastal and rural locations, as well as the vibrant cities. Even for those students located in the city centres, a beach or woodland walk is always likely to be no more than 30 minutes away.
Wales is home to universities that offer some of the best international student support the UK has to offer. Cardiff Metropolitan University were ranked as the top UK University for overall international student support six years in succession, and that really is something the university and entire country can be proud of. For international students, English is not their native language, and universities in Wales are very supportive with access to free English language support available at all of Wales’ universities. English is spoken by the vast majority of people in Wales, and around 19% of the population also speak Welsh.
A wide scope of financial support is available to international students, and these range from scholarships and grants, to fellowships, bursaries, loans and financial awards. Students can check out the EducationUK website for details on the variety of scholarships that are available with different universities in Wales. Alternatively, you can contact your local British Council Office to learn more about what they offer students from your country when studying in the UK.
