The student room - choosing the right kind of student accommodation

Students outside student accommodationOver the past 15 years we have housed thousands of student tenants into their ideal student room. They have told us their experience so we put together the tips and advice into this guide on choosing the suitable student room for you.

Types of accommodation

You will probably spend your first student year in the student hall before thinking of renting a private student room. During your first year you might have met a few friends and decided to take on a shared house together. As a group you will share the living costs so it’s a good idea if you are on a tight budget. Alternatively you can rent a room within a shared house alone if you don’t know enough people you can share a house with.

Tips: As a group, discuss openly about the shared responsibilities such as keeping the communal areas clean and paying rent and bills on time before making a decision. If you are renting a room yourself, make sure you understand what bills are included in the rent as every property will be different.

Find a property

You can start by looking on our website because we take on new Cardiff rental properties constantly. The best way to get started is to go into our Woodville Road branch in Cathays and speak to a Property Advisor. Our lettings team work very closely with the landlords so they can make recommendations for you and accompany you to viewings.

Tips: You can choose two or three properties you want to see and book one appointment to see them all.

During the viewing you will have the opportunity to find out if this is the right student room for you and ask any questions that you have. Our Property Advisors know the local areas really well so don’t be afraid to ask!

Tips: Go back to the area at different times of the day to get an idea what’s really like living there.
