If you’re thinking of making a change and moving to a new area, city or perhaps even country, then you’re probably aware that there plenty of things to consider and factor in to ensure it turns out to be the best move for you. There are many things a new place can bring, and they can each have an affect on your happiness and quality of life. Therefore, taking the plunge and upping sticks to a new place is a decision that should be considered very carefully beforehand.

Below I’ve highlighted just a few important factors you may want to consider when choosing a new location to live in, with some perhaps proving more important than others to different people depending on what you require from a home.

Opportunities of employment

You have to be sure that you’ll find it easy enough to make a living to support yourself and your family, so employment opportunities are extremely important - both in terms of opportunities within your chosen career industry as well as financial needs being adequately met (for both you and any spouse). Depending on your chosen line of work, certain cities or countries may be more appealing than others in terms of available employment opportunities.

The cost of living

Linked with employment is the cost of living - you’ll want to earn a satisfactory wage within your career. Just like salaries, the cost of living can vary greatly depending on the location. Whether it’s the cost of renting or buying a home, payable taxes, insurance, transportation costs, utilities, food etc. You need to factor in all of these expenses before deciding whether or not you can comfortably afford to settle in a new location, especially in light of any probable changes to your salary.

Transportation around the area

From your day-to-day commute to running errands to proximity to airports for your annual get-away, the transportation system around the location needs to meet your requirements. Some cities have extremely efficient public transport systems, so you may find that the need for your own vehicle isn’t essential, while others may see you benefit greatly from having your own personal transportation. The commute to and from work is usually one of the more important factors for many people as nobody wants to spend a large portion of their life stuck in slow peak-time traffic. With that said, it’s still useful to consider this factor alongside everything else the area can offer so that you can balance everything up when deciding.

Local schools and the education system

If you have children or plan to have them in the future, then schools that are within the vicinity as well as the actual quality of the education system is something you should explore beforehand. Just like the commute to work, you’ll also want to make sure that all schools that you’ll need over the years are suitable and within close proximity of where you live.

Distance from family and friends

Relationships with family and friends are different from one person to the next, so understanding how comfortable you’ll be with living a certain distance from loved ones is something important to consider. For some, it’s imperative they are walking distance or at least a short drive away, whereas some may be happy being a few hours away while others see distance as no issue at all. It’s important to balance everything out and making a decision that works best for you.
