We're all about being eco-friendly in the CPS Homes office and with everyone feeling the pinch of high bills right now, we've come up with some useful advice on keeping those costs down.
These tips will help get you on your way to a cheaper energy bill so you can save those pennies for other essentials - just make sure all your housemates get on board with them too!
With winter looming ahead, its a bright idea to switch to LED light bulbs. They're proven to be more efficient than the traditional ones and use about half the energy that those bigger, spiral 'energy-saving bulbs' use. The upfront cost might be a bit more, but they last a lot longer and use far less power, driving real energy savings.
Before heading up to bed, turn everything off - properly! TVs, Playstations, Xboxes, microwaves, washing machines, dishwashers and coffee machines are still draining electricity when in standby mode, so get in the habit of switching them off correctly and save up to £65 a year.
Take care not to overfill the washing machine, as the weight of all that extra laundry will make it work harder and therefore cost you more. At the same time, don't be tempted to wash in super small loads (however much you might need THAT dress or shirt for a big night out!). More frequent washing = higher energy usage.
As a rule of thumb, fill your washing machine so about 3/4 of the drum is full. Washing at 30 degrees is a wise idea too, saving around 40% of the energy you use each year compared with washing on a higher temperature.
Everyone loves to wake up to a fully charged phone ready for the day ahead, but leaving it charging all night is pretty wasteful when you think it about it, as it only really needs a couple of hours. Similarly to appliances on standby, things left on charge continue to use up energy even when their battery is full. Same goes for iPads and laptops, so be mindful of charging them for too long unnecessarily.
