Moving to a new city can be both an exciting and daunting experience, whether you're making the move solo, with a partner or uprooting as a family with children in tow. If you're somewhat familiar with the city then that can help to some extent, but you may find that your knowledge of the suburbs that are away from the city centre is limited - regardless of how clued up you are on Cardiff's hotspots. The reason for your move, the lifestyle you like to lead, the budget you're working with and whether you're looking to rent or buy will all help you narrow down the areas of Cardiff that might work for you.
Below you'll find a list of areas in Cardiff that you may want to consider living in if you're new to the city, but do remember that there are many other Cardiff suburbs that aren't listed here but which may still meet your needs. To learn more about these alternative areas do check out our guide to living in Cardiff, or feel free to connect with our team of experts here at CPS Homes to get the lowdown.
Cyncoed is without doubt one of the more desirable areas in Cardiff and does require a healthy budget, but if you're looking to move your family to one of the most sought-after suburbs this is a location you'll want to consider. Cyncoed is also home to what is regarded by many as some of the city's most popular schools, streets are lined with some of the most beautiful homes and the neighbouring suburbs also have plenty to offer as well, such as nearby Roath and Penylan.

If you're moving to Cardiff solo or with a partner or friend, then you may be more inclined to find comfort within the city centre itself. For socialising and a quick commute to work - provided you work in or near the city centre, that is - you'll have everything on your doorstep, quite literally, if you choose a centrally located flat or apartment as your humble abode. Other suburbs such as Grangetown, Adamsdown and Canton are also within ear shot of the city centre, so these may be viable options for you as well and can also better cater for families who want to live close to the city.

Pontprennau is a fairly young suburb that gained most of its expansion during the 1990's. It's a few miles away from the city, therefore it can offer a quieter life, but rest assured it's still perfectly equipped to suit a wide range of people moving to Cardiff. Transport links serve the area well, it's a short drive from some stunning Welsh countryside and there are also a wide range of local schools and amenities within the area. Other suburbs within this catchment area that can offer good value for money include Pentwyn and Llanedeyrn.

No recommendation of which area to choose if you're new to Cardiff would be complete without a mention of the ever-popular Cardiff Bay. It's mostly suited to young couples and professionals due to the vast choice of apartments that surround Mermaid Quay and other areas of Cardiff Bay, but there are also pockets of townhouses available that would be more suited to a family. It's perfect for those who enjoy taking in popular sights and fresh air, and if you happen to be moving to Cardiff from the coastline perhaps choosing an area that's surrounded by a bay might help you settle in. Neighbouring Penarth is also an area that you could consider if you prefer life by the sea.
